How to Build Leadership Skills for Business Management Students Skip to main content

Do you have the right personality for College?

Good leadership is at the core of effective management in any business. A great leader not only sets an example for their employees but also empowers their team through efficient delegation and successful implementation of policies and strategies. Leaders accept feedback from their colleagues and have the self-awareness necessary to adapt when their methods don’t achieve the right results.  Being a leader might sound simple on paper, but in reality, leadership skills can be difficult to develop.

If you’re considering a career in business management, both you and your future team will benefit when you take the time to improve your leadership skills. The moment when you build the skills necessary to become a great leader, you’ll be a valuable member of any workplace environment.

Below are some ways to start enhancing your capacity as a leader.

Engage in Self Reflection to Determine Your Leadership Style

The first step to being a great leader involves taking the time to self-reflect. Leaders must know themselves well in order to set an example for their team and build self-awareness. Consider your leadership style. Are you more of a coach who works hard to motivate your team, or are you more of a pacesetter, providing hands-on guidance to lead your team toward its goal? You might also be more of a hands-off leader—one who sets an example to be followed. Whatever your leadership style may be, it’s important to determine which style works best for you.

The best way to identify your leadership style is by taking the time to examine your personal strengths and weaknesses. Are you a great motivator? Are you adaptable? Do you have trouble delegating? Knowing what you’re good at (and what you aren’t) will make it easier for you to develop a plan of action and a style of leadership after completing your business management training. When your team is familiar with your style of leadership, they’ll be able to adapt their workflows accordingly.

Set Goals for Yourself and Your Team as a Leader

A great leader is able to come up with goals for their team and develop the right strategies to achieve them. As a leader, it’s important to provide your team with a clear sense of what they are working towards. Formulate goals that are both realistic and achievable, and develop a step-by-step plan which involves delegating tasks and responsibilities to each member of your team in alignment with the goals you’ve set. Having goals in place can lead to increases in both the motivation and productivity of your team, but only if you have a clear plan in place to reach these goals. When leading your team, frequently return to these goals in order to remind everyone of the purpose of the work they’re putting in. Your colleagues will appreciate having a clear sense of direction, enabling them to work more efficiently.

Prioritize Communication

After you become a business manager, it’s essential to make communication between you and your team a priority. Good communication isn’t just about keeping your team informed – it also means being a good listener. As a leader, develop your communication skills by checking in with your team frequently. Ask for feedback, and attempt to empathize with your team members if something isn’t working for them. Seeing an issue from the perspective of another person will help you to make decisions and enact policies that benefit the rest of your team, and your colleagues will appreciate it when you take the time to make changes that fit their needs.

Be an Inspiration to Others

They say that the best way to lead is by example. While leadership involves a little more than simply setting an example for the rest of your team, it surely doesn’t hurt to be an inspiration to others. An effective leader is one who motivates their team by displaying both a positive attitude and a strong work ethic. When your team sees how much you care and how hard you work, they’ll be inspired to put in the effort to achieve their goals. If you want to be a leader who inspires others, a business management program can equip you with the skills you need to succeed in the business world.
