Eligible employers can get government funding to help employees access training opportunities.

What is the Canada Job Grant?

The Canada Job Grant helps employers train new or existing employees for jobs that need to be filled. This flexible program is designed to meet the needs of businesses of all sizes, in all industries and regions. Having the right skills helps employees excel and succeed in today’s fast-paced labour market.

The training is intended for employed individuals acquiring new skills for their current job, or to prepare for another job with the same employer, and for unemployed individuals seeking a new job. The employer must have a job available at the end of the training for the individual being trained.

Training must not exceed one year in duration and training institution eligibility is determined by individual provinces and territories. The following provinces are currently accepting employer applications for the Canada Job Grant: BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and PEI.

Invest in your workforce 

The Canada-Alberta Job Grant provides an opportunity for employers to invest in training with help from the government. Small, medium and large businesses can take advantage of the grant and deliver short-term training to existing and new employees.

  • Provide up to $10,000 in government support per person for training costs.
  • The program is available to private and not-for-profit sector employers of all sizes across the province.
  • Eligible costs include – tuition, textbooks, software,  mandatory student fees and examination fees.
  • Individual employers are capped at $300,000 per year in grant funding.

Eligible Candidates

  • The employee must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected persons under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act entitled to work in Canada. Workers temporarily in Alberta are not eligible.
  • Employed individuals acquiring new skills for their job or to prepare for a new job with the same employer.
  • Unemployed individuals seeking a new job with the assurance from an employer that a job will be available at the end of the training.

Training is required to be delivered by an eligible, third-party trainer such as private trainers in compliance with the Private Career Colleges Act.

Employer Application Process

The Canada Alberta Job Grant has simplified the payment process for employers.   Employers can now fill out one form and receive one grant payment.  Fill out the Training Completion form when training is complete and submit with applicable receipts to receive 100 percent of eligible funding.  Employers will still have the option to receive two payment installments if required.
