Course Introduction

Typography is what sets designers apart from other artists. In visual communication, typography must be integrated into a total design.

In the Fundamentals of Typography course, students explore the anatomy of the letterform. Through interactive lectures and hands-on projects, they learn how to classify typefaces and use them creatively. Understanding the fundamentals of typography will give their work power, eloquence, and beauty.

Course Prerequisites

Photoshop Basics and Illustrator Basics courses or equivalent experience.

Lesson 1:

The Language of Letterform; Early Typography; Key Measures; Tale of Two Typographers; Case Studies: Today’s Typefaces

Lesson 2:

Type Classification; The Type Connoisseur; What to Look For; Classification Categories; Practicing Type Recognition

Lesson 3:

Display Type: Quirky and Loving It; Display Typography; Type is Image, Too; In-Your-Face Type; Modern Display Type Designers; Display Type in Print and on Screen

Course Notes

Evaluation is based solely on an Academy of Learning Career College final exam. Prior to taking the final exam, students must successfully complete all the components of the online course material. Participants who receive 75% or higher on their exam will receive a certificate.
