Module 1: Defining Your Goals and Brand

At the outset of a design career, questions arise: Where should I look for work? How much money can I expect? How can I stand out? This module helps students navigate choppy economic waters and address the eternal choice between freelance and full-time employment. Students will learn how to determine which environment is right for their personality and long-term career prospects, and they will start to develop a persona as a professional designer.

Module 2: Résumé and Portfolio Building

When the right job comes along, one needs to be ready to apply with a sharp résumé and portfolio. Students will look at the ingredients necessary for an effective and good-looking résumé. They will also learn tips for cover letter writing to make a great first impression and will examine how to present work effectively in-person and online.

Module 3: Self-Promotion and Finding Your Clients

Clients don’t call designers out of anywhere. To get jobs, one needs to develop a marketing strategy. This module covers different ways of reaching clients and employers, including researching leads and networking at events.
