ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- Grade 12 or equivalent or Mature Student Status (at least 19 and out of school for one year).
- Courses are open to any applicant who possesses a good command of the English language and is able to follow instruction
- An admissions interview will be administered to determine if the applicant has the required interest, motivation, and entry-level skills to take this program
- Adequate level of physical health to be able to fulfill job requirements
- Completion of Wonderlic admission test with minimum score of 18 ELP requirement
PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check may be required by industry prior to placement
- Other medical tests (e.g., TB Test) or proof of vaccinations (e.g., Hep B) may be required by
industry prior to placement

Program Objective
This program provides students with the base knowledge, skills, and work experience to become employable in a wide range of medical settings. Skill development is delivered in three areas:
- Comprehensive medical administrative knowledge, which includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, medical office administrative,
and clinical procedures - Full-range of computer and office skills, including current software applications, keyboarding skills, general office management, accounting, personal and professional development, and customer service
- On-site work-experience through participation in a one month clinical externship at an approved healthcare training facility
Duties & Responsibilities
- Medical Office assistants perform a variety of secretarial and administrative duties in doctor’s offices, hospitals, medical clinics and other medical settings. Examples:
- Initiate and maintain confidential medical files and records
- Schedule and confirm medical appointments and receive and communicate messages for medical staff and patients
- Interview patients in order to complete forms, documents and case histories
- Complete insurance and other claim forms
- Prepare financial statements and billing
- Establish and maintain various internal office administrative support procedures such as document tracking and filing and monthly reporting

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Introduction to Keyboarding
Learn about the components of the computer and keyboard, as well as the seating, posture, and hand positioning necessary for efficient keyboarding.
Keyboard Skill Building Level 1
Students will increase key recognition and build confidence using the keyboard, while improving speed and accuracy.
Keyboard Skill Building Level 2
Designed for individuals proficient in keyboarding who wish to increase speed and dexterity.
Business Correspondence level 1
Develop the skills and style mechanics needed to produce personal and office correspondence.
Basic Bookkeeping Level 1
Basic Bookkeeping Level 1 course provides students with an understanding of the double-entry system of bookkeeping and provides the essential accounting tools for the workplace. The course is especially beneficial for students planning to take a computer accounting program or use computer accounting in the workplace.
Medical Office Procedures
Medical Office Procedures provides students with the front office (administrative) skills to work in a healthcare facility or medical office. Topics include professionalism, teamwork, communication skills, ethics, reception skills, scheduling, medical records, and filing. Students learn the application of skills in a computerized environment, as well as the utilization of paper medical records.
Intro to Medical Transcription
Introduction to Medical Transcription provides students with an understanding of medical documents and how to create them. Students learn the fundamental concepts of all aspects of medical transcription, how to create accurate documents, the importance of confidentiality with regard to medical reports, the rules of proofreading and editing, and how to transcribe medical reports using the correct capitalization, numbers, punctuation, abbreviations, symbols, and metric measurement rules.
Clinical Procedures
Provides students with an understanding of the everyday responsibilities that are commonly performed by a Medical Office Assistant. Topics include medical asepsis, personal hygiene, infection control, workplace safety, and First Aid and CPR. Students learn daily routines, vital signs and basic measurements, instruments used for examinations, and the purpose of blood tests.
Electronic Procedures
Introduces students to the concept and fundamentals of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) in Canada (hereafter referred to as EHR). Students learn how to choose an EHR, implement it in a medical office, and how to troubleshoot. Students are introduced to various software and their functions, including billing and coding, scheduling, patient registry, and privacy and security legislation for a medical environment. The course combines theoretical and practical hands-on use of an EHR from both administrative and clinical perspectives.
First Aid
This course serves as an introduction to First Aid,concentrating on CPR skills, controlling bleeding, treating shock, and respiratory emergencies
Basic Rescuer (level C) CPR Cert
This course offers an overview of first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for the workplace which includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines and training.
Microsoft Word Level 1
In this course, students learn to create, navigate, and organize documents and use the help functions. They learn to edit and manipulate text, view and format documents, and use Word’s predefined functions. Students use the Find and Replace feature, use proofing and language tools, create, format and modify tables, work with hyperlinks and cross-references, and learn how to preview and print a document.
Microsoft Word Level 2
Intermediate Microsoft Word. Learn how to edit and add formatting and special characters, create envelopes and labels, perform mail merges, develop tables of contents
and tables of figures, and more.
Microsoft Word Level 3
Advanced Microsoft Word. Learn how to use templates and themes to create a consistent look for your documents. Navigate bookmarks, Track Changes, automate tasks, create footnotes and endnotes, bibliographies, and more.
Microsoft Excel Level 1
In this course, students learn to create and manage worksheets and workbook files; enter data and create basic formulas to perform calculations. They learn to edit and manipulate cell content, modify worksheet structure, view and format worksheets, and use Excel’s predefined functions. Students use the Find and Replace feature, use themes to format workbooks and practise preparing, previewing, and printing worksheets.
Microsoft Access Level 1
This course teaches students the fundamentals of the Microsoft Access application. In this course, students examine database objects and learn to manage data in a database. They learn to sort and filter data, display and format data, and use simple queries to retrieve data. Students learn to create and modify databases and tables and work with simple forms and reports.
Windows Level 1
This course covers the basic concepts and most commonly used features and functions of Windows 10. The course will walk you through performing basic operations such as opening applications, using Help and shutting down the computer. Additionally, you will learn to set up user accounts, create and use custom keyboard shortcuts, personalize and organize the working space, and use the Action Centre. The course will also provide you with hands-on experience on how to connect, use and update devices, use File Explorer to manage files and folders, as well as navigate the internet using various browsers, including Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge.
Outlook Level 1
Beginner Microsoft Outlook. Learn how to manage email, contacts, scheduling and tasks in Microsoft Outlook.
Job Search and Resume Writing
Learn traditional and innovative job-search techniques and resume writing skills required to gain employment in today’s competitive marketplace. The course combines theoretical, how-to information with hands-on practical applications.
Intro to Medical Terminology
Introduces basic knowledge of the medical language and word structures, terms pertaining to the body as a whole, and pharmacology. Students learn to analyze medical words, identify the body cavities, explain how suffixes and prefixes affect medical terms, and classify the various routes of drug administration. This course consists of 15 days (75 hours) of daily, participative learning sessions.
Anatomy and Physiology Level 1
Anatomy and Physiology Part 1 provides students with the terminology and conditions related to some of the body systems: female reproductive, digestive, and urinary. Students learn to identify abnormal conditions of the female reproductive system and of a newborn child, describe the common conditions affecting the digestive system, and define the medical terms relating to the urinary system.
Anatomy and Physiology Level 2
Anatomy and Physiology Part 2 provides students with the terminology and conditions of some of the body systems: musculoskeletal, male reproductive, and cardiovascular. Students learn to describe the musculoskeletal anatomy, identify the vocabulary and terminology for the male reproductive system, and explain major pathological conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels.
